Description

Andrew Johnson, a lithograph by P. Kramer, was produced circa 1855 and is believed to originate from Philadelphia. The piece portrays the fifteenth President of the United States and bears the distinct signature of Peter Kramer, a Bavarian lithographer of note.

Upon his immigration to the United States in 1848, Peter Kramer commenced his professional association with P.S. Duval, a reputable lithographic publisher in Philadelphia, a collaboration that lasted until 1857. Kramer's work on this particular lithograph demonstrates the prevailing standards and techniques of printmaking during the mid-nineteenth century in America.

Peter Kramer's own history is interwoven with both European and American experiences. After departing from P.S. Duval's employment, Kramer returned to Germany but faced exile due to his controversial caricatures of the King of Bavaria. This led him back to the United States, where he continued his artistic pursuits until his death in 1907. Through this lithograph of Andrew Johnson, viewers can gain insight into the merging of Kramer's European training and his American influences during a significant period in U.S. history.
