First American Atlas Published in France
Finely executed atlas of the "Two Americas", published in Paris in 1825.
Buchon's work is the first French edition, with many notable and important additions (see below), of Carey & Lea’s American Atlas, originally issued in Philadelphia in 1822. Though the cartography of the present atlas is largely based on the Carey & Lea, this French atlas is really a different work, as it includes significant additional material:
- Information from the important Long map of Arkansas Territory.
- The latest from the independent republics of Latin America, including the full text (in French) of Mexico’s constitution, ratified only the year before, in 1824.
- Changes reflected in the map of Alaska (Russian America) following the Treaty of 1825.
The individual state maps (24 states, 3 territories, and the District of Columbia) present perhaps the most up-to-date and detailed cartography available at the time. Notable among these is the map of Florida (see Servies's Florida bibliography). There is a beautiful colored map depicting the territorial expansion of the United States and colored charts of U.S. history and a comparative table of the state constitutions. Most of maps include extensive French text printed in the margins, presenting useful information on the history, resources, and institutions of the region depicted. For larger states such as New York and for larger countries like the United States and Mexico, the historical text extends to additional pages. There are also plates comparing the size of the world’s great mountains and rivers.
According to Phillips’s List of Geographical Atlases: Maps are like those in the English edition except for nos. 5, 13, and 35, which are markedly different, and nos. 3, 6, 36, 42-43, and 49-50, which have been added. Thus this French atlas by Buchon adds entirely new and important material, including a special geographical chart of the United States, the Constitution of Mexico, a map of Puerto Rico and more.
The two-two-sheet map of Arkansas Territory is based on the 1823 Long map of the Great Plains and Mississippi Valley and shows the region as far west as Santa Fe.
A beautiful atlas, with the maps showing nice original hand color, and printed on fine paper, superior to that of the original Carey & Lea.

Jean Alexandre Buchon (1791-1849) was a French scholar and historian. Born as the French Revolution raged, Buchon was dedicated to recovering France’s history in order to help the country heal and grow. He gathered French stories and published them as part of Collection des chroniques nationales franciases ecrites en langue vulgaire, du XIe au XVIe siècle (4 vols, 1824-1829). He also compiled and published an exploration collection and several histories, particularly about medieval France.
For geography, his most important contribution was publication of the French edition of Carey & Lea’s American Atlas in 1825. Each page of the atlas includes highly detailed text about the state or territory depicted, as well as a map of the area. The French edition is generally considered in high regard as compared to other editions, as it has quality paper and superior engraving.
