Description

Detailed map of Chile in 1846, showing the Capital, Missions, Indian Villages, Limits of the Christians and Indians, roads, paths through the Cordilleras, principal roads, and similar details, rom Historia Fisica y Politica de Chile, segun documentos adquiridos en esta Republica durante doce annos de residencia en ella, published in Santiago and Paris in 28 volumes + 2 atlas volumes, between 1844 and 1871. In 1830, the French botanist Claude Gay was asked by the government of Chile to make a detailed description of the history, geography, geology and natural history of their country. Gay travelled through Chile during 11 years to do all the scientific research he needed for his work. The result was the present work, the first complete description of Chilean history and a model in modern historiography, with its meticulous examination of sources and documents. The complete set is now on the market for over $50,000. Some spotting at the bottom, but a good example from this rare and important work.
