Description:

Rare map of the Republic of Texas, which was included in two rare French pamphlet's on the Republic of Texas, Frederic LeClerc's Le Texas et Sa Revolution… and Henri Fournel's Coup d'Oeil Historique et Statistique sur le Texas.

The map notes that the source of the map is Brue's map of Mexico (probably the 1834 edition), which has been reviewed and substantially corrected by Le Clerc. Fournel was the publisher of the Le Clerc pamphlet. Both are exceptionally rare. The map notes 27 Divisions of Texas, including the Commanche region in the Northwest. Texas is in its smaller configuration (and curiously shaped at that), not yet extending to the Rio Grande. The map is exceptionally detailed for the time period. LeClerc arrived in Texas in early 1838.

Streeter notes that his first hand observations of Galveston, Houston, San Felipe and Bejaar or San Antonio are most interesting. The work is dedicated to President Lamar. Lamar's Papers include a letter from LeClerc requesting permission to make the dedication. Streeter remarked that Fournel's pamphlet was an excellent brief account of Texas. Fournel expresses his appreciation to General James Hamilton, whom he interviewed on several occasions while Hamilton was in Paris negotiating a bank loan for Texas to finance its drive for independence. A nice example of one of the rarest French maps of the Republic.

Condition Description: Minor reinforcement along a few folds, and one tiny restoration.
