Seneca Ray Stoddard was a naturalist, writer, poet, artist, cartographer and landscape photographer. His guidebook, "The Adirondacks: Illustrated", first published in 1873, and the first tourist map of the Adirondacks, first published in 1874, were among his most noteworthy works.

In 1878, Stoddard produced a topographical survey of the Adirondacks. In 1892, he was invited to give an illustrated lecture to the New York State Legislature which was greatly influential in the creation of the Adirondack Park.
