Description

Finely executed presentation quality manuscript plan of the Siege of Gibraltar, showing the British Siege of Gibraltar in 1781 and 1782, drawn by a Pilot of Gibraltar for the Captain of the Port of Gibraltar.

The map shows in meticulous details the ship engaged in the siege. Among the earliest details are the identification of the Fire Ships (June 1781) off Rosia Bay. The Spanish Fortifications are shown in meticulous details, as are the location of the British and Spanish Fleets.

Ignatius Reiner served as the Pilot of Gibraltar to William Sweetland, who served as the Captain of the Port of Gibraltar.

Full Title:

Plan of the Bay and Soundings & of the Rock and Town of Gibraltar with the Works, Batters and Encampment of the Spanish Army on the 19th of October 1782, The position of the Combined Fleet, and the attack by the Battering Ships on September 13 of the Same Year. Drawn, and humbly presented to William Sweetland Esqre. by His most Humble and Obdient Servant, Ignatius Reiner.

The Siege of Gibraltar is one of the best documented naval engagements of the 18th century. However, the current manuscript plan, which is likely drawn retrospectively, is quite unusual, in that it is drawn by well known chartmaker and harbor pilot (Ignatius Reiner) for the Captain of the Port of Gibraltar (William Sweetland).
