Description

Early map of Asia, the Indian Ocean and part of North America and Africa from Solinus' Polyhistor, rerum toto orbe memorabilium thesaurus locupletissimus. Huic ob argumenti similitudinem Pomponii Melae de situ orbis libros tres adiunximus.

Fascinating map of Asia and the Indian Ocean, based upon a blend of Ptolomaic and modern information. Includes an elaborate scene in the Indian Ocean. The map is also noteworthy as being of the first delineations of a strait between America and Asia, with America labeled Terra Incognita.

The present example is from the 1543 edition, as it lacks the t 4 signature (lower right corner).

Solinus was a third century Latin Scholar, who compiled a number of earlier ancient works in his Polyhistor, which contains a short description of the ancient world, with remarks on historical, social, religious and natural history questions. Much of the work is drawn from Pliny's work on Natural History and Pomponius Mela's work on Geography.
