Description

Hiighly detailed map of the island of Nevis, published by Edward Stanford in London.

The map was created in the same year that the Baronetage of Sir Thomas Graham Briggs was created (Briggs Dayrell).

Oriented with East at the top, the map shows township or county areas: Saint James Windward, Saint George Gingerland, Saint Thomas Lowland, Saint Paul Charlestown, Saint John Figtree, denoted by different colors. Names roads (private & public), forts, villages, municipal buildings, churches, wells, pastures, landowners, mansions, commerical buildings (kilns, works, distilleries), hills, ravines and more.

Also marked site of Jamestown destroyed by earthquake 30th April, 1860, Ehausted Crater, bays, coves and many more details.

The map is dedicated to Sir Thomas Graham Briggs, 1st Baronet, a landed proprietor of Barbados and Nevis, who also owned estates in Nevis and was a Member of Council and Magistrate. Briggs was also a noted archaeological collector of artifacts from St. Vincent, St. Kitts, Nevis, St. Lucia and Antigua.
