Description

Rare thematic map of the Imperial Roman Empire, with 2 maps of the Mediterranean at the center, published in Rome, by Antoine de Rossi.

The fascsinating thematic map is intended to depict the development of the territories belonging to the Roman Empire.

The present example is the second state of the map, which has been revised to include small birdseye views of Constantinople, Madrid, Vienna, Rome, Paris, and London, with dozens of additional city names appearing in blank bubble, apparently in anticipation of views being added in subsequent states.

In the lower half of the map, there are 6 coats of arms and many blank coats of arms, again apparently in anticipation of further engraving.

Martignoni intended this work as a new means of teaching European History in an easy, comprehensible, and all-encompassing manner by means of historical maps composed in a special methodical way. The title of his work translates as " Explanation of the historical map of France and Britain since the birth of Jesus Christ until the year 1700, which contains abbreviated key events of these kingdoms during the Roman Empire."
