Description

A fine mid-19th Century aquatint view of Madrid.

This attractive view takes in Madrid from a southeasterly perspective, from the left bank of the Manzanares River, near the old Toledo Bridge. The city rises on a highland in the background, with the Palacio Real appearing prominently in the upper left.

By the 1840s, the Spanish capital had recovered from the turmoil of the Napoleonic Wars, as testified by the lively scenes of commerce shown in the foreground. Madrid then had a population of about 200,000, and this view was taken shortly before the city's fortunes would be revitalized by the construction of railways.

The view is part of a rare series of panoramas of European cities made by the firm, Verlag von G. Schubert of Leipzig. The company was noted for producing a wide variety of high quality prints, including a fine map of Munich (1837). Amazingly, in spite of several wars and the Communist regime in East Germany, the firm still survives to this day.
