Description

Unique Anson Jones signed Republic of Texas Land Certificate with a manuscript map of an area on Buffalo Bayou, approximately 25 miles west of Houston.

The land grant provides for the transfer of land in Harris County, Texas, to John Levi, as the assignee of J.N.O. Jones, from the Republic of Texas.

The land certificate is dated December 31, 1845 and signed by Anson Jones, as president of the Republic of Texas and includes a very detailed description of the land which is illustrated on the hand drawn map on the back of the Certificate.

The map on the verso would appear to cover the land in the general vicinity of Cinco Ranch, somewhere immediately west of the Cullen-Barker (now George Bush) Park.

Drawn by H. Tiebout, who represents that it is " a true copy from map in Genl Land Office," the map identifies the lands of:

J.N.O. Smith of Harris Co 25 Mle Wet of the City of Houston, near Buffalo Bayou. Contains about 630 acres timber and arable, the balance pasture Land, Timber, Pine, Poast Oak, Bzk Jack, Gum and Ellm.

Other land owners listed on the map include D. Middleton, P. P. Hosley, Mathews, Williams, Richardson, J. Cunningham, Jessee Sitton, and J.C. Bartlett.
