Description

Scarce illustration of an anonymous cartographer studying an armillary sphere, published by Gilles Demarteau in Paris.

The image shows an experienced cartographer at his desk, contemplating an armillery sphere. It is a very finely executed print, employing the medium of aquatint using red ink, a new medium that was considered difficult to execute. It was generally favored for use in fine art prints, and was a speciality of Gilles Demarteau (1722-1776), the Engraver to Louis XV and one of the leading art printers of 18th Century France. Demarteau became famous for engraving copies of the paintings of Frangonard, Boucher, Van Loo and other contemporary greats.

This is a rare, separately-issued piece. We have never encountered another example.
