Description

Rare separately issued chart of the Florida, the Caribbean and part of the Coast of Mexico, South America and Central America, published by John Andrews and John Harris.

The map provides and excellent large format treatment of Southern Florida, the Caribbean and contiguous coastline of Central America and Mexico, along iwth the prevailing trade winds. The treatment of the Bahamas and the accurate coastline of Florida is of special note.

First issued in 1783, this detailed separately issued chart was intended to compete with Sayer & Bennett's A New General Chart of the West Indies from the Latest Marine Journals and Survey, Regulated and Ascertained by Astronomical Observations, which was one of the earliest charts of the region to benefit from the advances in longitudinal coordination.

The map is quite rare. This is the first time we have ever seen the map, althought it appears to be a later issue of Edward's map of the West Indies, with some changes.
