Description

First edition of this rare and important large format map of Brazil, published by Baron Homem de Mello in 1875, an important work by one of Brazil's leading map makers of the second half of the 19th Century.

The Carta Physica was Baron Homem de Mello's first significant cartographic work and one of the best maps published in Brazil during this period. The map includes territory taken by Brazil from Paraguay after the Triple Alliance war, and was made for the National Exposition of Brazil.

Baron Homem de Mello would later publish atlases of Brazil in 1882 and 1909, including his Atlas do Imperio do Brazil, segundo os dados officiaes existentes e outros documentos fomecidos pelo Ex. Sr. Conselheiro Barao Homem de Mello e Tenente Coronel de Engenheiros Francisco Antonio Pimenta Bueno e pelos mesmos revisto. Organisado e gravado por Claudio Lomellino de Carvalho. Baron Homem de Mello was elected as a Fellow of the American Geographical Society in 1877. At the time of his death, he was a professor at the National School of Fine Arts and Second Vice President of the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Society and the author of a number of important works on Brazilian Geography.
