Description

Rare first edition of Distrunell's map showing the progress of the Mexican War, extending from Corpus Christi and the Rio Grande in the north to Mexico City and Puebla.

The map is reported to have been copied from a manuscript map captured from General Mariano Arista at the battle of Resaca de la Palma.

Disturnell's map of the Seat of War is probably the most famous of all maps of the Mexican War. The map was updated periodically during the course of the War, adding additional details in the narrative section in the top right corner and includes smaller maps showing a Plan of Monterey, map of the Battle Grounds near the Rio Grande River, environs of Tampico and Chart of the Bay of Vera Cruz.

The map also includes two decorative vignettes and a table of distances, along a table showing the heights of towns and mountains.

In the second edition, Disturnell adds additional text and a view of Vera Cruz and the Castle of Sn Juan de Uloa.
