Description: Fine old color example of Ortelius' maps of the islands of Sicily, Malta, Sardinia, Corfu, Elba and Zerbia, from the Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first modern Atlas of the World.
Includes a number of sailing ships, including a sinking vessel off Malta's coast, which is a reference to St. Paul's ship. Based upon maps by Lafreri and Jean Quintin.
The present example is without question the finest old color example we have seen for this map, with the verso also elegantly colored.
