Description

Fine early view of Honolulu by Barthélemy Lauvergne, from the extremely rare Album historique, which was a part of Auguste Nicholas Vaillant's Voyage autour du monde exécuté pendant les années 1836 et 1837 sur la corvette La Bonite.

Lauvergne's view of Honolulu is one of the earliest obtainable illustrations of Honolulu Harbor and appears to be from a perspective which is similar to Louis Choris's painting of 1816, although the present illustration shows a much more primative scene, with only a single sail boat and more native Hawaiians.

Vaillant's journey in La Bonite (1836-1837) took him to Rio de Janiero, Valparaiso, Hawaii, Honolulu, the Philippines and China. His main purpose was to extend protection to French subjects in the countries he visited and to draw up comprehensive political reports. At the same, he managed to conduct detailed scientific and geographic surveys. The series included a very rare set of plates of Hawaii, including: 7. Village de Kearakekoua [Sandwich Islands]; 8. Vallee du Pari pres Honoloulou (sic); 9. Scene de danse aux iles Sandwich; 10. Monument eleve a Hawaii au Capitaine Cook; 11. Vue de Honolulu; 12. Echouage aux iles Sandwich.
