Description: Nice example of the the world and continents, from Marchetti's edition of Ortelius' Epitome, first published in Brescia in 1598.
The set provides a fine look at the geographical features of the world as known at the end of the 18th Century. The world maps includes a massive Terra Austalis non dum cognita (unknown southern continent) and a very optimistic projection of the Northwest and Northeast Passages. America include the extra bulge in South America, characteristic of Ortelius's early maps of of America. Asia includes an unusual projection of Japan and no sign of Korea.
The earliest editions of Ortelius's Epitome were published by Galle. The Marchetti edition of the world map can be distinguished from the earlier editions by the parallel lines around the world map. The earlier world map by Galle was cross hatched.
