Rare Paris edition of this unusual decorative map of the World, oriented to show the "Hemisphere Marine" (Southern Hemisphere) and "Hemisphere Terrestre" (Northern Hemisphere) by Charles Pierre Boullanger.
The map includes a massive Bay of the West and partial coastlines of New Zealand and Australia. No sign of the discovery of Antarctica. Paris is at the centre of the right sphere, so that Europe, Asia, Africa, North America and most of South America appear together: the left sphere contains Patagonia, Australia and the East Indian Islands. Thus Santini could name the two halves 'Hemisphere Maritime' and 'Hemisphere Terrestre'. Australia and New Zealand are only shown partially (despite Cook a decade before); the erroneous 'Mer de L'Ouest' appears in northwest America, with a large 'I. Nouvelle' just south of the Bering Straits; and Jesso is part of mainland Asia.
While the Venice editions of the map appear on the market periodically, this is the first example of the original French edition we have seen on the market.
Jean Lattré (fl. 1743-1793) was a Parisian bookseller and engraver who published many maps, plans, globes, and atlases. He worked closely with other important French cartographers, including Janvier, Bonne, and Delamarche, as well as other European mapmakers, such as William Faden, Santini, and Zannoni. Lattré is also interesting due to his propensity to bring suits against those who copied his work; plagiarism was common practice in eighteenth-century cartography and mapmakers struggled to maintain proprietary maps and information.
