Description: Rare separately issued map of America, published by Jacob Sandart and engraved by J.B. Homann, one of the earliest extent maps to bear Homann's name as an engraver This finely engraved map is one of the earliest examples of Johann Baptiste Homann's engraving work. Sandart was at the leading edge of map makers based in Germany, who would in the 18th Century replace the Amsteram publishers as the most prolific commercial map makers on the European continent, along with the French. The map shows California as an island, based upon the second Sanson model, with Terra Esonis and Fretum Anian named and shown. Also includes an early treatment of the coast of Australia. The map itself is embellished with a number of animals in North America and tribal village vignettes in Brazil. The allegorical vignette at the bottom left is especially evocative. The engraving is a precursor to the bolder German style of engraving, characteristic of Homann, Seutter and Lotter, although perhaps with a greater artistry. The map is very rare, this being the first example we have seen on the market in 20+ years.
