Description: Interesting image of 3 naked women (Sibyls or prophetesses) with garlands on their heads, from a Latin edition of Munster's Cosmography one of the most influential georgaphical works of the 16th Century.
The word sibyl comes (via Latin) from the Greek word σ?βυλλα sibylla, meaning prophetess. The earliest oracular seeresses known as the sibyls of antiquity, prophesized at certain holy sites, under the divine influence of a deity, originally— at Delphi and Pessinos— one of the chthonic deities. Later in antiquity, sibyls wandered from place to place.
