Description:

Decorative full color example of Ogilby’s dramatic view of the harbor of Lima.

Dramatic view of the port of Lima, with a Dutch fleet under Admiral Hermites unsuccessfully beseiging the Spanish settlement at Lima. Founded by Pizarro in 1535, Lima became the focal point of Spanish expansion in South America. It became the capital of the Spanish Empire's most extensive Viceroyalty, and one of the richest towns in the colony. The city's layout was patterned after Roman settlements, and containing over 117 blocks surrounding an inner square.

This view appeared in John Ogilby’s seminal work, America: Being the Latest, and Most Accurate Description of the New World, published in London in 1671. Ogilby’s work is an English translation of Arnoldus Montanus’ Die Nieuwe en onbekende Weereld…, published in Amerstdam, although greatly expanded in some instances and with new maps and views.
