Fine example of Philippe Galle's rare map of the World, engraved for the first edition of his Spieghel del Werelt, the first miniature edition of Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum.

This exceptionally engraved map appeared only in the earliest editions of Oretlius' atlas, and was quickly replaced by the much smaller Typus Orbis Terrarum, beginning in 1588 (4 x 3 inches).  The present example reflects the superb work of its engraver, faithfully duplicating the details of Ortelius' large 1570 World Map, including most of the same annotations.

A fine example, with full wide margins.  The Ortelius-Galle World Map is extremely rare on the market, with the last catalogued entry by Jonathan Potter in November 2001 (Item #4).   This is the second time we have owned this particular example of the map, having previously offered it for sale in 1997.
