Description

Extremely rare map of the newly formed United States by Daniel Friedrich Sotzmann, which appeared in Historisch-Genealogischer Calender, published in Berlin in 1783.

The map is one of the first examples of a map of America printed by D.F. Sotzmann, who would go on in the next 15 years to publish a set of extremely important early maps of the individual states. The map is noted in Mapforum Volume 1, Early Maps of the United States, as one of the earliest printed maps to note the name United States (#49).

Curiously, while the titles and text below the map are in French, the annotations within the map are entirely in English. We are aware of only one prior example of the map in a dealer catalogue (Suarez, 1988).
