Description: Gorgeous engraving showing the early lay out of the modern city of Cuzco, which was rebuilt by the Spanish when they invaded Peru.
Cuzco was built on the site of an ancient Incan city of the same name, which was the capitol of the Inca Empire. The ruins of the old town are scattered along the hillside in the background of the image, and the church of Santo Domingo to the right of the town stands on the base of the old Incan Sun Temple. This view appeared in John Ogilby’s America, published in London in 1671. Ogilby’s America was the most accurate compendium available of the New World.
