Description: Attractive map of North America, based upon De L'Isle's highly influential map of North America published in 1700, from Chatelain’s monumental 7 volume Atlas Historique, published in Amsterdam. California is a peninsula with a number of villages, mountains, and the Channel Islands shown. Mississippi extends far north of its true source. Large Florida and downplayed English colonies.
This fine map is a wonderful example from Chatelain’s important text. By combining a wealth of information and geographical observation, with delicate engraving and an uncomplicated composition, this elegant map is a superb example from the golden age of French mapmaking.
