Description

Rare separately issued plan of Charleston Harbor, lithographed by C.D. Andrew's and published in Boston in 1861, at the start of the Civil War.

One of the earliest separately issued Civil War Plans, being issued shortly after the start of the war. The map was compiled by Elliot & Ames from Government Surveys. This is the early state of the map, which was later issued by A. Williams.

The plan includes remarkable detail, including a town plan of Charleston and Mt. Pleasant, details showing Ft. Sumter, Ft. Johnson, Fort Moultrie and Moultrieville, the Battery erected by the Successionists, Castle Pinchney on Shute's Folly Island and extensive soundings. Other place names include Wappoo Creek, James Creek, James Island, Light House Creek, Vincent's Creek, Morris Island, Cumming's Point, Sullivan Island, Breach Inlet, the Cove, Hog Island, Shem Creek, Hadrell's Point, Cooper River, Wandoo River, Hobcaw Point, Drum Island, Twon Creek, White Point, the Charleston Arsenal and Battery, the S. Carolina RR, St. Phillips Church, St. Michael's Church, and Meeting Street. Many of the Channels and Rebellion Road are named. A note shows the Line of low water, line of the channels and other notes.

The map is quite rare, with only 5 institutional examples noted and only 1 prior dealer catalogue listing in the past 25 years.
