Description

Rare oversized Birdseye View of Los Angeles.

Remarkable and highy detailed birdseye view of Los Angeles, published by the Birdseye View Publishing Company of Los Angeles. The view extends to Hollywood, Glendale and Pasadena in the distance, with Downtown Los Angeles in the foreground and the Los Angeles River as the Eastern Boundary. The detail of the view is extraordinary, providing both geographical locations and a profile view of a number of buildings in the Downtown area and even names on many of the buildings.

At first glance, the view appears to be identical to the smaller (36 x 21.5 inch) Worthington Gates view of the same year (1909), which was also published by the Birdseye View Publishing Company. However, this example is over twice as large and has been colorized, unlike the smaller view. While Gates name does not appear on this view, the source appears to be identical. It is difficult to determine which was published earlier. The smaller Gates view was issued by the Western Litho. Co. The only other view produced by the Birdseye View Publishing Company was an equally rare view of Denver.

OCLC lists only 3 examples of the Worthington Gates view, including the Library of Congress example. The Library of Congress holds a copy of this larger version of the map, which we sold to the Library in 2006. Reps also notes the example owned by the Huntington Library. The present example has a label for The American Window Cleaning Company pasted over the date, immediatly below the title (at least we assume the date is on this example).
