Description

This fascinating map of Lake Michigan, Lake Superior and Lake Huron was copied from Sayer & Bennett's Map of the United States by George Washington Whistler, in connection with his work on the International Boundary between Canada and th United States, 1822-1826.

Whistler, father of the famed American artist James MacNeill Whistler, graduated from West Point in 1819. From 1822 to 1826, he was commissioned to work on the boundary survey, focusing on the region between Lake Superior and the Lake of the Woods. from 1826-1828, he was commissioned to perform surveys in the same region. Later, he became one of the most important early railroad engineersk, working on the construction of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and others, before moving the St. Petersburg, Russia, where he continued his work until his death in 1849. During his time at West Point and thereafter, he was among the most important and influential map makers under the service of the US Government.
