Description

Nice example of the rare map of Spain, published by Andreas Shottus in his rare work Hispaniæ Illustratæ seu rerum Urbinumque Hispaniæ, Lusatiæ, Æthiopiæ et Indiæ Scriptes Varii", published in Frankfurt 1603-1608.

The map closely follows Ortelius' map of Spain, but with a number of minor differences, including the lack of Ortelius' privilege in the lower right corner of the map.

Strong dark impression with wide margins. Large cartouche, 2 sea monsters and two ships. Ortelius in turn based his map on the map of Carolus Clusius or Charles de l'Escluse (1526-1609) a botanist by profession, who published a 6 sheet map of Spain in 1571.

Condition Description
A bit of staining at the outer edges, far from the printed image.
