Description

One of the most fascinating German maps of America we have seen.

Quivira is named, as is New Albion and Teguas. Fascinating treatment of Alaska, including a speculative passage through the Aleutians and a very curious coastline treatment for the period. Many placenames along the west coast of North America and in the Arctic Sea, where MacKenzie and Hearne are both mentioned. In Louisiana Territory, there are many early Indian notes and Tribal names. A rather unambitious treatment of the Missouri River, which ignores Lewis & Clark's recently published reports. The Gulf Stream is noted. Large inset of Catharina's Archipelagus (the Aleutians). A very early map to bear Streit's name and the first map we have seen with Campe's name. No appearances in dealer catalogues in the past 25 years.
