Description: Large format map of the Kingdom of Prester John, the mythical African King whom the Crusaders believed had converted to Christianity.
While Prester John and his Kingdom were mythical, it did not stop the major European Cartographic publishers from producing maps of his Kingdom in remarkable detail.
This example was issued in the 1613 French edition of the Mercator-Hondius Atlas. It includse remarkable georgaphical detail of Prester John's Kingdom along with notes regarding this and other Central African regions. A large Lake Zair and Zarian are shown as the source of the Nile. Large inset of the Congo.
