Description

Extremely rare decorative map of Asia, engraved by Robert Walton. The map follows the cartography of early maps by Nicholas Visscher the Elder and Joan Blaeu, but has been completely re-engraved, with English nomenclature and annotations. The map includes views of Aden, Jerusalem, Goa, Macao, Rodus, GmmaLamma, Bantam, Ormus, Calcutta and Arosbay, along with portraits of the kings of Tartary, China, Molucca, Turkey, Presia and Ceyon, and images of indigenous men and women in traditional costumes of China, Arabia, Java, and Tartary. The map is extremely rare, this being the first example we have ever seen offered for sale. Nice wide margins, with evidence of old folds, likely from having been bound into an early English edition of Heyln's Cosmography. The map was reissued with the same title by Henry Overton later in the 17th Century, but with significant changes in the cartographic content and without the Straits of Anian or part of America shown. Nice full color example of this rare English gem. Not in Burden.
