Description: Vibrantly colored example of Thomas Cowperthwaite's map of the Western States & Territories, the first American Atlas map to focus on the post-California Gold Rush Western United States. This is one of a series of approximately 15 maps issued between 1846 and 1860 which shows the evolution of the Territories and States of the West from the earliest admission of Upper California as a Territory in 1846, through the creation of the Territories of Utah, New Mexico, & Washington, but pre-dating the creation of Colorado, Arizona and Nevada. Over the period, the cartographic detail of these maps evolves from a Pre-Fremont look at the west to a relatively established set of Territories and early county configurations. A collection of 2 or more of these maps provides an excellent visual depiction of the evolution of the West from the Mexican War until the eve of the Civil War. The present example shows the Spanish Trail, Cooke's Wagon Route, Kearney's Route, Lewis & Clarke's Canoe Route, Oregon Route, early roads, towns, Indian Tribes, mining claims, mountains, rivers, etc. In California there is still o Lake Tahoe. A massive Tule Lake is shown, along with early California Counties shown. This is the last edition of the map to show a Pre-Gadsden purchase border with Mexico. Early forts located, especially in Oregon Territory. Nice topographical detail after Fremont, although still very conjectural in the Great Basin. The map is dominated by massive counties which extend the width of UT. Only the western counties of Oregon and Washington Territory are shown.
