Description

First state of this scarce map of the United States, issued shortly after the signing of the Treaty of Peace in January 1783.

This historical map titled Etats-Unis de l'Amerique Divises en 13 Provinces avec leurs Limites, suivant le Traite de Paix Fait le 20 Janvier 1783 portrays the newly formed United States in the wake of the American Revolutionary War. The map shows the boundaries of the United States, including its 13 colonies, in accordance with the Treaty of Paris, which concluded the war and formally recognized American independence.  The treaty pre-dates the formal peace treaty, signed on September 3, 1783.

The map covers the region from Newfoundland in the northeast, through the American states along the eastern seaboard, extending westward to the Mississippi River, and southward to encompass the entirety of Florida. Unique features include a fragmented southern Florida coastline, an oversized Pennsylvania that stretches north to Lake Erie, and an inclusion of numerous Native American tribes, such as the Mohawks in northern New York.
