Description

The Heroes of Hannukah

The engraving entitled "Grafgebouw Der Makkabeen Opgeregt Te Moding" presents an architectural rendering of the reputed tomb of the Maccabees, constructed at Modin.  

The illustration portrays a monumental edifice, flanked by soaring columns and adorned with classical ornamentation, which reflects the contemporaneous European fascination with antiquity and biblical history. The symmetry and balance exhibited in the architecture convey a sense of order and reverence appropriate to the Maccabees, whose revolt against Hellenistic influences is a foundational narrative of Jewish perseverance and faith.
