Description

Rare separately issued map of Asia by Pierre Mariette, based upon Hondius' map of Asia.

The map has one significant improvement from the Hondius map--Korea is labeled "Corea Isthmus," where as the Hondius map shows Korea as an Island.

The present example is almost certainly a proof state of the map. Most notably, the many parallel lines used as guides for the words in the title and the larger lettered words (such as Oceanus Occidentalis, America, Pars, Mare Tartaricum, etc) are normally removed from the final copperplate, once a map is ready for publication.

Shows a curiously configured Korea and Japan. The Great Wall of China is relatively incomplete. Marvelous treatment of the Philippines.

Mariette may have intended additional changes to the map, as the cartouches also look unfinished.

We have not been able to locate any other recorded examples of this map.
