Description: Fine full color example of the first printed map of Ohio.
The map appeared in Thaddeus Mason Harris' The JOURNAL Of A TOUR Into The TERRITORY NORTHWEST Of The ALLEGHANY MOUNTAINS; Made in the Spring of the Year 1803 . . .
Harris, a Harvard-graduate Unitarian clergyman, primarily known today as a former librarian for the Massachusetts Historical Society [1837 - 1842]. Harris undertook his journey primarily to offset the effects of illness. He was accompanied by Seth Adams & John Dix. Harris dedicated the book to Rufus Putnam [1738 - 1824], former Revolutionary War General and then Surveryor General for the United States, and also the man responisble for this map, which has the distinction of being the first separate one for the state.
A number of towns and early forst are located, as are the areas obtained in the Treaty of Grenville.
