Description:

Early survey map of a portion of the Vermont Avenue Tract, showing part of Santa Monica bounded by Pico Blvd, Vermont, Highland and  Venice Boulevard.

The land would seem to correspond with a large section of Santa Monica, just south of Santa Monica High School.  Ths seems to be the same tract of land transferred to Lorenzo Gavitt in 1878 (http://www.raremaps.com/gallery/detail/28993).

Theodore Koeberle was on of Los Angeles' earliest surveyors.

The W. Gillelen noted in the map would seem to be Warren Pierce Gillelen (1849 - 1931).  Gillelen was a banker and land speculator, who was active in Los Angeles in the 1880s.

Later in the decade, Gillelen apparently was an investor in oil related properties in Southern California, at one point transferring land held by William Gillelen Properties to Associated Oil Company, then run by William Stirling Porter.

Robert Wolfenden Kenny and Warren Gillelen were indicated by a federal grand jury in Oregon for land fraud. They were found not guilty and were acquitted in May 1908.

This map is offered as a pair only with #28993.
