Description:

Nice example of the rare 1508 modern map of Italy, the second earliest modern map of Italy to appear in  printed atlas.

Printed on 2 sheet, the map appeared only in the third edition of the Rome Ptolemy Atlas, first printed in 1478.  Other notable inclusions in this first ediion are the Johannes Ruysch World map (Universalior Cogniti Orbis Tabula ex Recentibus Confecta Orbservationibus) and Tabula Moderna Prussie, Livonie, Norvegie et Gottie, the first map of Scandinavia printed with a copper plate.

The map is updated from the 1507 edition using the same plate, but with small changes to the spelling of several words in the map, the addition of degrees across the top and the text in the upper left is now 4 lines and there are annotations printed in the right margin.  Maps from the 1507-1508 Rome Ptolemy are extremely rare on the market, this being the first copy of the map we have ever seen.
