Description:

Second edition of the second state of Ortelius' World Map, the rarest of all editions.

Identifiable by the removal of the date (1586), which occurred in late 1587, this rare world map is known only in a handful of surviving examples. Van Den Broecke (2.2) notes that this edition appeared in only few examples of the 1587 French and 1588 Spanish editions of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, meaning that there were likely less than 100 examples printed.

The map is largely similar to the first state of Ortelius' World Map, although in Van Den Broecke's 2.3, the coastline of South America is corrected, as it appears in the third edition of the map.  Both the Northwest & Northeast Passages are shown quite boldly, although based completely upon myth and conjecture. A massive Terra Australis Nondum Cognita is shown with equally bold conjecture in the Southern Hemisphere. South America is shown in its potato configuration, as is the case in the first edition of this map. An elongated Northwest Coast of America is shown, along with Anian. Civola is shown, along with Quivira. Includes several sea monsters, a sailing ship and other decorative embellishments.

One of the most important and recognizable maps of the World, based upon Mercator's large world map of 1569.  Van Den Broecke notes that having been used for only 2 years, all 3 of the variants of the second edition are rare, this apparently being the rarest.
