Description: Striking map from the 1594-95 Latin edition of Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first modern atlas of the world. Marvelous decorative map, featuring many misprojected regions, including Japan, the Philippines and other islands. A hint of Terrae Austalis is shown, along with an oversized Nova Guinea. Although not mentioned by Burden, this is also one of the first maps to show California, although unlike the Ortelius Tartaria, California is not named, although Quivera, Cicuie and Tiguez are named. Two cartouches, sea monsters, mermaids, ships and other decorative features. Van den Broecke 166.
