Description: Very rare example of Colton's map of the Northwest, the first time we have ever seen this map. The map was issued in the year prior to Wyoming's first appearance, with the area which would become Wyoming shown as part of Dakota Territory. Montana is shown with only 2 counties, Missoula and Idaho (which extends from Idaho into Montana). Idaho includes onl y 5 counties, including an unnamed upper county and massive Boise County). Very few counties are shown east of the Cascades in Washington and Oregon. The map includes remarkable detail throughout, including the Cherokee Trail, U.S. Pony Express and Mail Route, Fremont's Route, proposed route from Gallatin City to Ft. Laramie, Donelson's route, Lander's route, Mullin's route, the Emigrant Road, McClellan's route, Stevens Route and others. US Forts are marked with a US Flag. Many Indian Tribes and place names shown. Fascinating detail in eastern Oregon and Washington as well. Includes distances to some of the major Midwestern US Forts and towns. Excellent detail in Montana and Idaho as well, including notes on the Valley of the Yellow-stone, Hellgate Passes-Gate of the Mountain or Grand Defile [sic?], and many other early notes and details. Only one appearance in a dealer catalogue in the past 25 years. The map was certainly only issued for a single year and perhaps only part of the year.
