Early Mechanical Description of the F-82
A very detailed aircraft identification poster of the F-82 published by the British government post-World War II. This poster features mechanical designs that illustrate the parts of the plane such as wing sections, propellers, landing gear, and multiple views. These technical illustrations include specific measurements, to provide a comprehensive understanding of the F-82's unique features.
The poster also includes two images of the F-82. One is a dynamic depiction of the F-82 in flight while the other is a basic silhouette of the craft. Both images convey the unique twin-cockpit design and general shape of the F-82 which would help soldiers accurately identify friendly aircraft.
The F-82 Twin Mustang
Originally designed for use in the Pacific as a long-range escort fighter by the U.S. Army Air Forces, the F-82 Twin Mustang continues to be an iconic aircraft, perhaps due to its unique design. The F-82 solved the problem of limited fighter range by essentially combining two planes into one. The twin fuselages provided more output for the propellers and engines which increased effective range. A further innovation came in the form of the F-82's cockpits, which allowed for a pilot and a co-pilot or radar operator to occupy each section allowing for more efficient navigation of the aircraft.
Despite the innovations attempted with the F-82 Twin Mustang, the advent of jet power diminished the mechanical and combat abilities of the aircraft and it was no longer a viable option to use. Nevertheless, the F-82 received much attention during its combat debut in Korea. The duel fuselages made for an iconic sight and many today still recognize the unique design of this early Cold War aircraft.
