Description

An impressive set of 12 engraved portraits of Roman empresses, engraved by Aegidius Sadeler.

The sources for Sadeler's depictions of the empresses are unknown. It is speculated by some contemporary art historians that he may have drawn inspiration from the works of Hans von Achen (1552-1615) or Bartholomeus Spranger (1546-1611), both of whom were court artists for Emperor Rudolf II in Prague.

The set includes:

  1. Pompeia Iulii Caes. Uxor. [Wife of Julius Caesar. She was married to him until he divorced her around 62 BC.]
  2. Livia Drusilla D. Oct. Augusti Uxor. [Wife of Emperor Augustus, also known as Livia Drusilla. She was a powerful and influential empress, mother to Tiberius.]
  3. Agrippina Tiberii Uxor. [Vipsania Agrippina, the first wife of Emperor Tiberius.]
  4. Caesonia Caesar: Caligulae Uxor. [Wife of Emperor Caligula, known for her controversial and scandalous relationship with him.]
  5. Aeli Petina Claudii Uxor. [Second wife of Emperor Claudius.]
  6. Statilia Mesallina Claudii Neron Uxor. [Third wife of Emperor Nero whom she married after the death of his second wife, Poppaea Sabina.]
  7. Lepida Sergii Galbae Uxor. [Wife of Emperor Galba, little is known about her.]
  8. Albia Terentia Othonis Mater. [Mother of Emperor Otho.]
  9. Petronia Vitaellii Prima Uxor. [First wife of Emperor Vitellius.]
  10. Flavia Domicilla Vespasiani Uxor. [Wife of Emperor Vespasian, and mother of Emperors Titus and Domitian.]
  11. Martia Fulvia Titi Vespesian. Uxor. [Wife of Emperor Titus, known as Marcia Furnilla. They divorced and she is less well-known than other imperial women.]
