First edition, first printing ("Gilbert Parker's Best Books...") of Stephen Crane's famous novel exploring the experiences of a young Union soldier named Henry Fleming during the American Civil War. Initially filled with romantic notions of heroism and eager for glory, Henry struggles with fear and self-doubt upon encountering the brutal reality of war. After fleeing from the heat of battle, he is wracked with guilt and shame. As he wrestles with his conscience, Henry encounters wounded soldiers and observes the harsh consequences of the war, which lead him to question the meanings of courage and cowardice.

The book is scarce in commerce but very rare with its dustjacket. The present example has the dust jacket, and the cloth binding and interior are nearly pristine.

Condition Description
Octavo. Publisher's cloth stamped in black, red, and gilt. (Dust jacket with some wear, particularly at the extremities). Housed in 20th-century ¼ brown levant morocco clamshell case.
