Description

This World War I propaganda poster, titled "Four years in the fight. The Women of France, we owe them houses of cheer," was created by Lucien Jonas, a renowned French military artist, and produced by the Istrobridge Lithograph Company of Cincinnati and New York.

Part of the 1918 United War Work Campaign and sponsored by the Y.W.C.A., the poster vividly depicts French women laboring in a foundry, a setting traditionally dominated by men. These women, wearing caps and wooden clogs, are shown pouring molten metal and forging machinery, symbolizing their pivotal role in the war effort. The backdrop features a large window overlooking a street, across which is the "Foyer Des Alliees," adorned with American and French flags.

This image not only highlights the industriousness and resilience of these women but also serves as a call to the American homefront to support the war work efforts. The campaign, as detailed by VCU, aimed to raise substantial funds to boost morale and provide recreational activities for soldiers, successfully gathering over $203 million.
